SUMMARY: In this highly visible and critical position, the Director of Medical Affairs for the Companion Animal Group Medical Organization will lead a team of Medical Affairs Managers. Medical Affairs Managers serve as technical & medical liaisons aligned with Research & Development, Lines of Business, and Commercial Marketing with the goal of ensuring the effective development, launch, and support of diagnostic products for companion animals. The Director of Medical Affairs will align with Line of Business Managers to proactively shape and implement the strategic approach taken by Medical Affairs to support products in various stages by presenting and influencing medical content in the industry through a variety of internal and external audiences and relationships with thought leaders, universities and key customers.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drive strategic objectives of Medical Affairs.
Strategize with Lines of Business and Research & Development to shape product portfolios as supported by medical knowledge and customer insight generation research.
Collaborate with Research & Development to shape product development to ensure relevance and efficacy in the market as supported by medical knowledge.
Ensure best-practice medical content relevant to IDEXX product portfolio is available to the industry through multiple channels, including but not limited to: lectures, seminars, accredited webinars, white papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Partner with key medical guidance organizations to ensure alignment on best practice medicine within the industry as it relates to key research findings.
Collaborate on the strategy of engaging Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to conduct industry research to support medical advancement.
Ensures global harmonization of results delivered internationally via development and management of worldwide standards.
Lead & Develop the Medical Affairs team.
Manage staff, assign work, monitor activities, evaluate performance, manage critical issues, administer employment actions, and promote staff training and development. Support the development of department budget, policies and procedures.
Provide leadership to Medical Affairs Managers, ensuring alignment to strategic direction with a balance of medical expertise and strong commercial mindset.
Coach and develop team around key competencies required for success in the position.
Attend industry conferences to build and maintain relationships with KOLs and other industry professionals
Perform other duties as assigned.
DVM degree or country equivalent.
Board certification or advanced training strongly preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
8+ years of experience leading teams and developing professionals to be best in class.
Strategic thinker with the ability to partner with IDEXX business leads to help design successful marketing plans and tactics.
In-depth veterinary medicine knowledge expertise including knowledge of diagnostic testing, current treatment recommendations/options, monitoring protocols and clinical pathology (training, experience, publications, professional accreditation, etc.).
Strong Commercial mindset and experience aligning medical education with the Commercial Launch process for new product and on-market support of product portfolios.
Strong communications skills, both verbal (includes presentation skills) and written (correspondence, internal/published technical pieces); Ability to use strong communication skills to build credibility to persuade and influence.
Excellent interpersonal skills
